Otters Weekly Update - Week of 7.15.19

July 15th

Hi Otters,

We had a nail biting meet against Fair Oaks this past Saturday! Unfortunately, the Otters came up just a few points short of swimming away with a victory. The final score was Oakton 208.5 and Fair Oaks 211.5. Despite the loss, we showed up with a ton of Otter spirit and lots of best times! Swim Ninja was there and featured our meet on their website. Swim-A-Thon: On Thursday, July 18th, the coaches will be running the annual swim-a-thon during regular morning practices. The swim-a-thon this year will be conducted in honor of Daniel Nugent, Coach Nick Highman’s brother who passed away earlier this year. Daniel was a member of the Oakton Otters Dive Team from inception. Donations will be made in memory of Daniel to the CJD Foundation, which supports families affected by Prion Disease. Coaches Gifts: We would love to thank our wonderful coaches for all their hard work that they have put in over the summer. A lot of time and effort goes in behind the scenes to ensure that our swimmers have the best summer experience possible. If you would like to help reward the coaches for all their hard work then please place these contributions, any dollar amount, in the Souders file cabinet folder. Please mark as "Coach Gifts" - if you wish, you can designate how you want it allocated. Cash or checks made out to "Kristen Souders". We will present this to them at the banquet.
Coaches Scrapbooks: Beginning today, there will be colored paper available in a bin on the filing cabinet for Otter families and swimmers to make pages for our fabulous coaches. Some families choose to make one page per family and others create one page per swimmer. Either is welcome.Tables will be set up in the social room on Monday July 22nd if swimmers would like to complete their pages in the morning before or after swim practice. Please only take the materials that you need. The deadline for submitting pages is Thursday, July 25th. Please put your completed pages in the box marked “Swim Team Scrapbook Pages” on top of the file cabinet. If anyone has questions, please contact Jenn Doe at [email protected].

Afternoon Swim Practice Schedule (Tuesday & Thursday): Afternoon practices will be held Tuesdays & Thursdays for those swimmers who cannot make it to the morning practice or for those swimmers who want to have extra practice time in the water.

11 & Older: 5pm-6pm

10 & U: 6pm-6:45pm (Sorry this practice is not for pups)

Declaration of A Meet Availability: IMPORTANT- please be sure that you have marked your swimmer as available or not available for our last Saturday A Meet against Virginia Run. Remember it is much easier to scratch your swimmer at the last minute than it is to add them in. If swimmer availability changes after you have marked it for a given A Meet, please reach out immediately to the meet reps via email at [email protected]. You can update swimmer availability in SwimTopia by clicking HERE. Thank you! 

MONDAY EVENT:

B- Meet @ Virginia Run: The fourth B-Meet of the season will be held at Virginia Run. Specific details will be provided from B Reps in a separate email.

**SPECIAL REQUEST - Virginia Run has a 10 lane pool so we would like to thank those parents who have offered to volunteer as extra timers tonight. Anyone who is willing to volunteer for at least part of the meet tonight please check in with Marcia Paulson or Kara Hayden upon arrival at Virginia Run. They will get you assigned to a lane. Ten lanes of swimming means extra timers but a FASTER meet! Thanks in advance for helping out!

TUESDAY EVENT:

Please plan on your swimmers staying about 20 minutes late after practice each Tuesday (this does not apply to Pups) for breakfast treats and bag tag/ribbon distribution.

All Star Relay Carnival @ Lincolnia Park: Good luck to our 11 relay teams that will be participating!

THURSDAY EVENTS

Swim-A-Thon:  This will take place during the regular morning practices.  See details above and in the attached file.

Team Event - Field Day! RESCHEDULED FROM 7/11 Lots of fun activities are planned for our 2nd annual Field Day to be held at OSRC from 3:00-5:00. Please RSVP on SwimTopia asap so that we know how many kids to plan for. This will not be a drop off event for 8 and unders. More details to follow!

FRIDAY EVENT

Pep Rally and Dinner: The Pep Rally theme this week is Holidays in July and will start at 5:00pm on Friday. Swimmers are encouraged to dress in a creative costume that aligns with the theme. Swimmer of the Week and Best Costume awards will be handed out as well. Dinner will be provided for all swimmers (sorry we won't have enough for the parents!) and FUN FOR ALL so you don’t want to miss it! Please RSVP by clicking HERE.

SATURDAY A MEET

A Meet vs. Virginia Run (Away): Our final A meet will be AWAY against Virginia Run. Once the coaches have completed the A meet sheet/swimmer stroke selection, communication will go out to all families of selected swimmers no later than Wednesday.

Team Lunch @ Jason's Deli: Please join us for a team lunch immediately after the meet at Jason's Deli, 12955 Fair Lakes Pkwy, Fairfax, VA 22033.
